The game serves as the third title in the series of SteamWorld and it is the sequel to the SteamWorld Dig. The player takes on the role of the protagonist named as Captain Piper Faraday, who is an occasional pirate and smuggler. The ultimate task of the player is to recruit a team with robots and sets out himself/herself on a space adventure. The player needs to board, shoot and loot his way through enemy spaceships and earn points to upgrade the abilities. The game is played from a side-scroll perspective and mixes the elements of shooting, strategy and turn-based combat with focus on skill rather than chance.
