The game lets you be a Spelunker in the game world who gets tasked with exploring a great number of tunnels/caves, collecting different items, saving the damsels and killing the enemies. You can kill the enemy by using your whip on him or by simply jumping on his head just like you did in Mario games. Spelunky provides with four different game worlds and a number of randomly generated game levels filled with a lot of exciting things.
