According to the gameplay, Atrus is capable of creating links to other mysterious worlds known as Ages by writing a book. The game offers the similar gameplay to its predecessors and allows the player to explore engaging, pre-rendered worlds called as Ages by using either the space bar or mouse clicks for movement around the world. It uses point and click interface to interact with environment and non-player characters. The player needs to explore the world from first-person perspective and struggle to complete a variety of objectives to progress through the game. So the protagonist needs to fight his way for his freedom by going against demons. There are three different endings, depending on the actions taken by the player throughout, each of which uncovers the different story of the murder of the protagonist’s family. The player can assume the role of the protagonist, who is capable of running, shooting, jumping, and interacting with NPCs and environments. With the addictive story, brilliant mechanics, and detailed graphics, The Suffering is the excellent game to play and enjoy.

The female protagonist has to travel from her time in 2003 to the 1940s to defeat the unknown entity and bring the peace to troubled spirits. The player assumes the role of the female protagonist and can control her using point and click interface like the previous game. There are a huge variety of weapons available, and the player can use to kill enemies and more. The player explores the environment from a third-person perspective, and his primary objective is to unlock new eras, solve mind-bending puzzles, and hide from vicious enemies. The game becomes more challenging, as the player advanced through the match. The player interacts with non-player characters, and objects to progress through the competition.
