Throughout the game, the player plays as a car named Lightning McQueen, and the main mission is to participate in races and tournaments. Lightning McQueen can participate in multiple race types such as circuit races, relay, and point-to-point.
The game features five nonlinear open worlds where the player experiences different things. Some of the game events allow the player to control other characters from the original film, such as the forklift Guido. A few events allow the player to participate in combat racing where the player who remains in the last alive wins.
