In the game, the player controls the protagonist named Hugo, who comes to a haunted house searching for his girlfriend named Penelope, who hasn’t seen since she came to babysit there. As the main character, the player needs to get into the haunted house in order to save his girlfriend from a mad scientist who captured her. During the gameplay, the player moves across the environment using arrow keys and controls the actions by entering commands. The player explores the house from a side-view, interact with objects and struggle to complete a set of objectives to move forward through the story. Like previous games of the series, it takes place in the post-WWII San Francisco in the futuristic year 2042. After the event of devastation due to nuclear war, major cities have been reconstructed, though specific areas remain as they were before the war.
