Throughout the game, the player has to control a fighter who has been engaged in beat-em-up matches against random but smarter AI bots. As the fourth main installment in the Dead or Alive game series, it contains all the features and characters from the last games, but some new things have also been added.

The game has six playable modes, including Story Mode, Time Attack, Survival mode, Team Battle, and Free-to-Play Mode. In the story mode, the player plays with the character’s backstory, time attack mode offers the player to defeat certain opponents in the shortest possible time, and survival mode challenges the player to defeat as many opponents as possible. Team Battle mode lets the player make a team of characters and fight against other teams, with a total of eight characters for every team. Free-to-Play mode is a standard one-on-one battle facing powerful bot fighters.
